Ubuntu Touch OTA-7
The UBports Foundation has officially rolled out Ubuntu Touch OTA-7, marking the seventh stable update based on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Focal Fossa). This update arrives just three weeks after OTA-6, delivering crucial security fixes and key improvements aimed at protecting user privacy.
Ubuntu Touch OTA-7: Why Sudden Update?
The rapid release of OTA-7 addresses two significant security vulnerabilities in the PulseAudio audio server, which powers Ubuntu Touch. Both issues could compromise user privacy if left unchecked.
- The First Vulnerability: Confined applications could exploit this flaw to disable the Trust Store permission system. This would allow them to access the phone’s microphone or perform other privileged actions without the user’s consent.
- The Second Vulnerability: Applications could crash the PulseAudio server by manipulating the volume control of a specific virtual device while connected to a Bluetooth headset.
“Both issues stem from the unique way Ubuntu Touch uses and patches PulseAudio,” said UBports. Interestingly, the second issue could also affect certain Ubuntu 16.04 installations running non-default configurations. To ensure a smooth and coordinated response, UBports worked closely with Canonical before making the update public.
Device Compatibility and Availability: Ubuntu Touch OTA-7
Ubuntu Touch OTA-7 is now rolling out to all supported devices, including popular models like:
- Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1
- Fairphone 3, 3+, and 4
- Google Pixel 3a and 3a XL
- OnePlus Nord N10 5G and N100
- Sony Xperia X
- Xiaomi Poco X3 NFC / X3…and more.
Existing users on the Stable channel can seamlessly upgrade to OTA-7 through the Updates section in the System Settings app.
